Abstract
Teacher grading and feedback are essential to learning writing in a second language (L2),
but they are time-consuming to teachers and may not always be provided promptly.
Applying AI techniques, such as GPT, appears to be a promising solution to the problem.
However, it is unclear whether GPT can predict scores close to expert assessment. This
talk will introduce some key concepts of GPTs, the nuts and bolts of conducting
automatic essay scoring (AES) with GPT, and recent related research. The speaker will
then evaluate the feasibility of using GPTs for AES, and discuss factors which may
influence score prediction, including GPT versions, languages of prompts, considerations
of language aspects (vocabulary, grammar, content, and organization) and providing
rationales behind the grading. This talk will conclude with several suggestions of using
GPT in AES for teachers and learners.
